Role of OT in ADHD Care
Occupational therapy (OT) offers a uniquely holistic, practical and evidence-based approach to supporting adults with ADHD, making it an ideal choice for those seeking to bring clarity, structure, and function to their daily lives. At its core, OT is a health profession focused on “doing”—enabling individuals to successfully engage in the self-care, productivity, and leisure activities that give their lives meaning and purpose. While OT is often associated with physical rehabilitation, occupational therapists (OTs) have a long history of effectively supporting individuals with neurodiverse profiles and mental health challenges. In fact, OT was founded as a response to the need for more integrated, meaningful approaches to mental health care.
A Real-World Functional Approach
Unlike ADHD interventions focused solely on medication or talk therapy, OT targets the real-life impact of ADHD—the missed deadlines, cluttered spaces, emotional spirals, and routines that never stick. OTs work collaboratively to identify specific areas of struggle in your life—whether it’s maintaining routines, managing household responsibilities, meeting work demands, nurturing relationships, or engaging in hobbies. These challenges often stem from core ADHD symptoms like executive dysfunction, inattention, and emotional regulation issues. From there, OTs develop personalized strategies and adaptations to improve your functioning in the areas that matter most to you.
OT is hands-on and goal-oriented—we don’t just talk about your challenges, we practice new strategies with you in session, adjusting tools and strategies to fit your real environments, routines, and strengths.
Empowerment Through Practical Solutions
The power of OT lies in its emphasis on skill-building and environmental modification, empowering individuals with ADHD to engage more confidently and consistently in valued activities and roles. OTs are trained in a wide range of evidence-based methods, and bring expertise in breaking complex tasks into manageable steps, teaching tools for time management, planning and organization, and introducing assistive technologies. We also help individuals with ADHD understand their sensory needs and create environments that reduce overwhelm and support sustained focus. By focusing on individualized, actionable solutions, OT doesn’t just aim to manage symptoms – it equips adults with ADHD to navigate daily life with greater ease, confidence, and a renewed sense of control and accomplishment.
As an occupational therapist, my role focuses on supporting individuals in managing the functional impacts of ADHD on their daily lives. Diagnosing ADHD is outside the scope of my practice. However, if you are seeking a formal diagnosis of ADHD, I would be happy to help direct you towards the appropriate healthcare professionals.

Your Personalized ADHD Sessions
At Unmuddle ADHD, our treatment sessions are designed to help you understand your ADHD and develop practical, sustainable strategies for managing its day-to-day impact. We take a truly individualized approach, tailoring support to your unique circumstances, including your mental health, sensory needs, daily roles, and physical environment. This isn't one-size-fits-all advice. Instead, we engage in a collaborative, client-centered, and strengths-based process, often drawing from evidence-based approaches like Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
Because we're committed to your unique journey, there's no fixed agenda—each session is shaped by your evolving goals, needs, and life context. This ensures the support you receive is always relevant and easy to put into practice. While your path is unique, many adults with ADHD find focus in common areas. You can expect sessions to explore: Executive Functioning Skills; Daily Life Skills; Emotional Regulation; Confidence and Self-Worth; Relationships; and Environmental Modification. For a more detailed breakdown of what support looks like in each area, please visit our Services page.
Regardless of focus, you can always expect our support to be:
Rooted in evidence-based practice
Grounded in doing—not just talking or planning
Collaborative and guided by your goals
Adaptable to what's happening in your life right now
Supportive of your strengths, not just your struggles
Respectful of your pace, preferences, and capacity
For the best results, Unmuddle ADHD sessions typically begin on a weekly or biweekly basis during the first few months. This early consistency helps build momentum, fosters a strong working relationship, and gives you time to learn and apply core strategies. As you gain confidence, build skills, and experience progress, sessions can gradually move to less frequent check-ins. No long-term commitment is required, but continual engagement, especially early on, helps create meaningful, lasting change.
Between sessions, there is an expectation of "homework"—this might include practicing new strategies, noticing certain patterns, or experimenting with tools in your daily routines. Most of the real progress happens outside of sessions, so applying what you learn in real-life situations is a key part of the process. If you're ever unsure about the pace or structure, we can adjust together based on your needs and goals.
Like any learning process, progress happens at a different pace for everyone, shaped by your individual goals, needs, and life circumstances. That said, many people begin noticing small changes within the first 3-4 treatment sessions such as improved self-awareness and task initiation. More noticeable and lasting improvements typically emerge over 3 to 6 months of consistent support—such as steadier daily habits and routines, better follow-through, improved emotional regulation, stronger executive functioning skills, clearer communication, and increased confidence.
It is important to remember that progress isn’t always linear. Each person will experience their own ups and downs while learning new skills and managing symptoms. Setbacks are a normal part of the process, not a sign of failure. What matters most is showing up consistently, being open to support, and offering yourself patience and compassion along the way.
All sessions are delivered virtually with the exception of the free 20-minute consultation which can be delivered via phone or virtually depending on your preference.
Sessions are conducted using a secure video platform that meets all Canadian privacy standards including FOIPPA, PIPEDA, and PIPA. Your personal information is handled with the highest degree of confidentiality and care. To support your privacy, we also encourage you to join sessions from a quiet, private space.
